Welcome to the world of scratchboard art, where incredible lifelike detail captures the spirit of nature.

Donna Webber is a self-taught artist who has spent many years working in different mediums but finds that scratchboard allows her to work in the familiar texture of black and white. Her painstaking attention to detail allows her to recreate images of animals and people with a stunning accuracy that translates the spirit of the subject and communicates it to the viewer.

Scratchboard art begins as a board, dipped in white china and coated with black India ink. Using a quill pen or hat pin, details are painstakingly etched into the surface of the board to create the image.

Highlights and shadows can be created using a variety of cuts, scrapes and dots, hatching and stippling techniques. Colour can also be added for an extra visual dimension, or the image can be left as a black and white image.
